Volunteers and professionals who give of their time and talents have always been contributing factors in the quality of life in Tacoma. Each year the City Council recognizes those exceptional individuals and organizations with the City of Destiny Awards.
Please consider the people and groups you know who have made a difference and take time to nominate them for a City of Destiny Award. Help us acknowledge the wonderful people who constantly make a difference for Tacoma.
To qualify for a City of Destiny Award, your nominee (individual or group) must meet the following eligibility standards in the volunteer categories:
Commit their time and energy, without financial compensation for their work;
Perform work within Tacoma’s City limits;
Perform work within the past 12 months (except for Lifetime Service category);
If they have previously received a City of Destiny award, nominate in a different category or in the same category if it has been at least seven years since receiving an award*.
To qualify for the Disability Advocate award in the professional category, your nominee must also:
Be a professional individual or business (may be compensated for their work);
Effectively initiate, establish, or support services or programs for people with disabilities;
Represent sustained positive impact on the quality of life for people with disabilities in the City of Tacoma.
To qualify for the Inspire Tacoma award the nominee should be an individual who has contributed to the city's continued growth and prosperity through civic engagement, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, or advocacy.
All nominees should embody spirit of City of Destiny through:
Integrity: Honest and ethical actions.
Compassion: Caring for marginalized communities.
Dedication: Commitment despite challenges.
Humility: Serving selflessly.
Respect: Valuing inclusivity and dignity.
Resilience: Overcoming obstacles with perseverance.

City of Destiny Awards - Category Descriptions
Adult Leadership - Individual that inspires others to help meet a need in the community.
Youth Leadership - Individual up to 18 years of age that inspires others to help meet a need in the community.
Lifetime Service - Dedicated service performed by an individual for an extended period that benefits the community.
Youth Service - Dedicated service performed by an individual up to 18 years of age that benefits the community.
Group - Teamwork in a project that benefits the community.
Environmental Sustainability - Group or individual of all ages dedicated to improving, conserving, or protecting the natural environment.
Disability Advocate - Individual, Group, or Professional dedicated to increasing accessibility to services such as employment, health, housing, civics, culture, recreation, facilities, and/or programs for people with disabilities.
Economic Development - Group or Individual dedicated to improving, encouraging, and promoting sustainable economic development for under-represented communities.
Equity & Empowerment - Group or individual dedicated to the promotion of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring all have access to resources and opportunities, with a specific focus on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
