DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION

About Event

Each year, the City’s Events & Recognitions Committee accepts nominations for individuals or groups that exemplify Dr. King’s teaching and action in community service. Nominees should share Dr. King’s legacy, and represent people of all color in the pursuit of hope, healing, and sustainable peace.

“By recognizing the important contributions from these community members and their leadership in transforming Tacoma, we honor Dr. King’s legacy each year,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “Their work and the uplifting cultural celebration for Dr. King inspires us all as we continue to heal the heart of Tacoma.”

The City’s Events & Recognitions Committee selects the honorees to receive awards and oversees the annual production of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

“The Events & Recognition Committee is looking forward to honoring our community by celebrating with arts, culture, and conversations of hope in our community,” said CERC Chair Jessica Johnston. “We strive to move forward to create a brighter tomorrow for all to flourish and celebrate our similarities and differences alike.”

If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl, but by all means, keep moving!

2025 award recipients

  • Brian Gatewood Sr. was raised in various parts of Pierce County, including the East Side of Tacoma, Parkland, Spanaway, and Lakewood. His upbringing in these diverse neighborhoods allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life, forging lifelong bonds that would later inspire his work.

Brian credits his mother with instilling in him a deep love for community. Known as the “community mom/aunty,” she spent years volunteering to cook for Teen Late Nights and mentoring youth who lacked positive role models. Today, she continues her legacy by directing youth programming for Innovative Change Makers (ICM).

In 2021, seeking a sense of purpose, Brian founded Innovative Change Makers. Drawing from his personal story of overcoming adversity, he set out to provide youth with safe spaces, mentorship, and alternatives to hazardous lifestyles, such as gang affiliation and violence. His mission: to empower youth to thrive and bring out the best versions of themselves.

Under Brian’s leadership, ICM has launched 12 active programs both in and out of schools, placing trusted adults and youth peer mentors in leadership roles. Through strategic partnerships with organizations like the Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Tacoma Urban League, The Tacoma Rescue Mission, Tacoma Public Schools, Kids Mental Health Pierce County, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, ICM delivers holistic programming that ensures youth have equitable opportunities to succeed.

Brian’s slogan, “Change Starts With YOUth,” reflects his belief that young people hold the key to building stronger communities. It also serves as a call to action, emphasizing that empowering youth creates ripple effects of positive change.

A firm believer in the power of partnerships, Brian has built ICM like a team, bringing together individuals and organizations from diverse sectors to create a collective movement for change. Living the motto “Relationships Produce Results,” Brian has personally delivered over 150 ICM team jerseys to individuals and organizations, symbolizing the shared commitment to community empowerment.
